Posted by Christine at August 14, 2003 03:33 AMI think ConsumerInfo.com is a CRA too, so I'm telling them to send me my free tri-merged report (I'm in Colorado):
ConsumerInfo.com
PO Box 1909
Orange, CA 92865
RE: SSN xxx-xx-xxxx DOB: xx/xx/xx
Dear Sir or Madam:
According to 15 U.S.C. § 1681a(f):
(f) The term "consumer reporting agency" means any person which, for monetary fees, dues, or on a cooperative nonprofit basis, regularly engages in whole or in part in the practice of assembling or evaluating consumer credit information or other information on consumers for the purpose of furnishing consumer reports to third parties, and which uses any means or facility of interstate commerce for the purpose of preparing or furnishing consumer reports.
According to your website you sell a tri-merged credit report, which is assembled consumer credit information. Pursuant to the Colorado Consumer Credit Reporting Act, you are required to send me one free credit report per year. Additionally, I have not received any disclosures as required by the Colorado Consumer Credit Reporting Act. Failure to comply will result in serious statutory penalities.
Sincerely,

I don't know anything about CO law, but it sure would be great if they are a CRA under State law. Arizona sucks for consumers.
Please let me know how that goes!
I wonder what Cal. state law says - got to check into that.

I reciently discovered an unusual purchase on my bank statement this month for $ 79.95 I knew for a fact that this had to be some kind of an error because I haven't used my debit card in the last 2 months. The next day I asked my bank some questions and was told that the company who charged me $ 79.95 out of my account was CIC*CREDIT MONITOR located in Orange, Ca. I had no clue who this company was nor did I know how they got my debit card numbers, especially when my bank card was still in my sight. I called CIC and a woman who barely spoke good english answered the phone. I told her that I had a purchase on my bank account that I did not authorize. After listening to what I had to say, she asked me for my social security number. I refused to give it to her primarily because I had no idea who this company was and if they fraudulent enough to take 79.95 from me already, who's to say they wouldn't try stilling my identity? After refusing, the lady insisted that I giver her my SS# right away or she wouldn't be able to fix my problem. May be I'm too strict with my own set of rules, but no one forces me to hand over my personal information with out a battle. I said, "Lady, I don't know who the hell you think you are but I'm not giving you my SS# by law I'm not required to do so. I wan't to speak with someone in charge of the consumers ralation group right this minute." without dispute she put me through and I found my self speaking to another woman whom also spoke poor english. After 30 minutes I felt like I was being sent in circles... most likely on purpose. Before it was all said and done, I ended up becoming very angry at CIC due to the fact that they were trying to make things very difficult over an un-authorized purchase error. I thought this was complete bull crap, and figured that I could play their game just as good or better. After My bank decided to take over the problem, I did some research on CIC*CREDIT MONITOR. To my discovery I found out that their is thousands upon thousands of people in the United States getting ripped off by CIC and a lot of those people have discribed their problem in the very same way that I have to you folks. The biggest part that has my concern is the fact that the government hasn't done anything about CIC. If I was a lawyer, I would probably start seeking out CIC'S victims and set up a heavy law-suit in court against CIC*CREDIT MONITOR.

I take it you ordered one of their "free credit reports."
I believe that there IS legal action pending against CIC.

I just found the same charge on my bank statement. The worst part is that I am stationed overseas and cannot make 800 calls. I stumbled accross this site when trying to search for a way to contact these people. Has anyone been able to get their money back?
Posted by: Daisy Gorgas at November 11, 2003 04:48 AM
I really don't know how many people get their money back. I will ask their attorneys for a fax # to send refund requests.
Posted by: Christine Baker at November 11, 2003 02:58 PM
Today 11/11/03 it happened to me also. I've just closed my checking cards and asked for new ones. I will have to wait 3 days and make checks and use my credit card in the meantime.
I was checking my balance on-line and I saw a pending transaction for the amount of $79.95. I called the bank at 9:00 PM asking for this transaction(I'm writing this at 10:21 PM), they said CIC Credit.
Immediately closed both me and my wife cards. I thought this was an illegal purchase on the internet. Immediately went to google (search engine) asking for info. And I've found many, many others like you in the same situation.
I feel so concerned. I've never ordered a credit report, how dare they take my money just like candy.
I'll make sure my bank reimburse me this amount:
-I've never ordered a credit report.
-The Bank should have known that this fraudulent transactions occured many times.
Reading the former post I won't bother calling CIC, actually there is so many CIC pages listed that I really don't know which one is.
It's a shame that something like this happens so easily. It could happen to many many people that don't even bother to check their account balances on a daily basis. Probably thousands of dollars have been stolen from Bank customers.
As for me, no cent from my account goes anywhere if I don't authorize it first.
I blame the banks as well, they have they so called "Security Protection", but how come they don't investigate this lowlife scum that make what they please in front of their noses.
Since my transaction has not been posted yet in my balance I will have to wait 2 days until gets posted. I will have to call again to Dispute Services to at last dispute my transaction.
I will keep my post here as a record of what is happening.
I feel so angry, I am a bank customer, and I feel at mercy.
If I have to sign for a lawsuit against these bastards I will.
Thanks for letting me vent...

i tried to get answers as well and they would not tell me anything because my husbands name was on the account and it is my checking account. i tried to cancel and they said he had to. he also stated that if i had ever purchased online before i would know that the person buying anything online only needed to type in credit card #'s, name and exp. date. and it was a done deal.

Both myself and my girlfriend signed up for their "free credit check" and then canceled, and we were both charged anyway. Go to www.consumerinfo.com and look up their customer service number. We were both able to get the money refunded in full, although I have no doubt that others haven't been so lucky, and countless people haven't even noticed.

The bastards got me too!!! I used freecreditreport.com about a year ago and cancelled my account well within the alloted month and just now got hit with $79.95 charge. This is outrageous and I am with whoever wants to sue to get their refund. Something should be done rather than just getting the money back so that it draws attention to these people and more unsuspecting people like ourselves don't get taken advantage of.

I contacted my credit card company and disputed this amount and also talked with CIC and they promised me a full refund of $79.95 in 7-10 business days....I will do a chargeback on them if they do not refund my money....they should be suied for fradulent advertising....free my ass!

Hi,
We have been hit as well. Noticed the deduction of $79.95 on my statement this morning. I've contacted my bank and they are working on a refund. I never ordered any credit report from these people and they have NOT heard the last from me! What really bothers me is how they came across my account number in the first place since I haven't used it online. A little scary!
Posted by: Trish at December 11, 2003 05:58 AM
Trish, you probably ordered a creditreport from them through another company. They use many different names. If not, please let me know.
If you didn't order, you should find out what happened.

Thanks for the info!
Posted by: Christy at December 11, 2003 02:21 PM
Noticed a charge on my card having cancelled this service OVER SIX MONTHS AGO. I don't know what these idiots were thinking.
They asked for my SS#, but after a very threatening response to that inquiry, the representative sufficed with my first and last name. In case they tried to pull anything, I promptly let them know about all the cases involving fraudulent charges on sites such as this one. The rep said that they sent me a confirmation email and that my account would be credited in 7-10 business days.
Let's see how this plays out.
Posted by: Mike at December 15, 2003 02:38 PM
Mike, it can only help to mention sites like this one and ripoffreports.com.
If you get the confirmation e-mail, you should be ok, but obviously watch for the credit.
And for everybody who's looking for contact info for CIC, go to their website and click on "contact." You should get to: http://qspace.iplace.com/cobrands/638/contact.asp?sc=3685conf
And of course I already posted more contact info than anyone could possibly want, including their attorneys' fax and phone #s: http://www.creditsuit.org/blog/archives/cat_consumerinfocom_defrauding_consumers.html
Posted by: Christine Baker at December 15, 2003 03:02 PM
Yeah...these fuckers got me too. I ordered the "free" credit report because I was having some problems with the information the credit companies had on file and my actual info. I gave them my credit card info. then received a message saying that they could not grant me access to my credit reports because my information did not match the information they had. I never even got to see my credit report. Then (now about 2 mo. later) a charge for $79.95 was removed from my account. What should I do? Will I get the money back?

I just wanted everyone to know, that i too am a victim of this credit reporting agency. I just found the charge on my online bank statement today. I proceeded to call the company, via the numbers listed throughout this forum, and spoke with a customer service rep. Like some others of us, they wanted either my SSN or the Account number they charged to find my acount. I refused to give either one, and they conceeded to look up my account by my name and address. After that small fight, there was no problem with them issuing me a refund ... so maybe we are getting through to them!! They said it would take 7-10 business days, so i'll wait and post again when i find out what happens. I'm so glad that i'm not alone in this.

It's been about a year since my last encounter with these pirates. I just noticed an unauthorized $79.95 charge to my credit card also, I went to find them on the web but all I found was a bunch of complaints on these leeches. I found their number and called from my home in Italy, only to get the run around and then I was told "that I was not actually being charged, this is a precharge to see if I had the funds" What a bunch of horse shit! It looks like a withdrawal to me. Pirates

It is really strange that there are many posted comments about CIC continuing to bill after cancellation, year after year.
The contact info including fax and e-mail are at http://forum.creditcourt.com/discus/messages/3301/3301.html, and nothing will change until many people file formal complaints either with the so-called regulatory agencies or with the courts.

Well I too received a charge with no clue of where it came from. Quickly got on the internet and found that I was not alone. Called the 1-888 number and explained to the agent in a FIRM tone of voice that I never used any of their services. She informed me that my acct. was closed and I should receive a confirm email within 48 hours and a refund 7-10 working days. I too will wait and see what happens next. Hi all! Today is the second time in the same month they charged me the $79.95. I did manage to find thier web site, and in very small writting it says a prorate refund will be made available upon request within so many days. Anyone who has not recieved this refund after so requesting should immediatly contact their lawyer and inform him of your situation and that several others are willing to join in a suit against them. You probably won't get all your money back after it's all said and done but better to screw with their wallet too than just let it go!!!

I just recieved an unauthorized charge on my checkcard that came directly out of my bank account in the amount of $79.95 from a company called CIC Credit Monitor SVC. I did request a "free" credit report off the internet but that was back in September or October of 2003. Here it is almost 5 months later and they charge my account. They hit you when you least expect it. They charged it on a Friday evening so that most banks and this company are closed on the weekend so you can't do anything about until 3 days later.
I will take legal action if I don't get my money back. This is an outrage!
Posted by: Robert V. at January 31, 2004 08:20 AM
I too am victim of this! The check for my latest car payment bounced, to my surprise, on January 28. I checked my bank statement for January, and there was a $79.95 charge on the account from CIC Credit Monitor. I have never heard of this company, nor did I sign up with them for anything. I called my bank, and they encouraged me to call them to see what the charge was for. Before I called, I went to the Internet and found this site among several others with complaints just like mine. When I called there today, I got a nervous-sounding 18 year old guy on the other line, who immediately asked me for my credit card number "to verify your account with us." I told him I do not give that information out to people I already do not trust, and then he proceeded to ask for my birthdate and my SS#. I told him if he could not look up record of that transaction without that information, then he'd be hearing from my bank on the matter. I have a message into my bank now, but I'm just steamed about the whole thing. I'm getting married this year, and $79.95 is very useful when you're paying for a wedding!

The contact info including fax and e-mail are at http://forum.creditcourt.com/discus/messages/3301/3301.html - put your complaint in writing, demand that they pay your bank fees and the auto loan fees for the bounced check, and make sure that you don't end up with a late payment on your credit.
Thing is, they must have received your account info somewhere, you probably ordered through one of their many other companies by different names.
Did you order a credit report anywhere?

Cic has gotten me 2 yrs in a row!!! I filled out my application for the FREE CREDIT REPORT online last February. In March I was charged the $79.95 on my bank account. I called CIC and complained... they told me that I had not cancelled within the 30 day trial period... so I sucked it up and let it go. I was out $79.95 but I felt that I should have read the small print. I cancelled my "membership" at that time in March.
This morning I was going over my bank statement online only to discover that I had a debit of $79.95 AGAIN from CIC!!!! I was looking for their phone number online only to find numerous websites dedicated to warning others about this SCAM!!! I was and still am FUMING and FURIOUS!! I read the BBB's report about how crappy CIC is. I also read about all of the potential law suits against this company.
After studying up on this subject, I called CIC. I got Joni on the line (ID# 62130). Before I even told her that I wanted a refund, I told her that I had been online for about 3 hours reading page after page of complaints regarding her company and how the BBB considers them some sort of a SCAM company. I then told her that I had been reading about several potential lawsuits regarding people who have been taken advantage of for $79.95 over and over again.
I then told her that I cancelled my membership a year ago yet was still getting billed???? for services that I never used or even signed up for??? She asked me for my SS#. I told her absolutly not... "I am looking at a website right now where someone had called and refused to give their SS# and you could look up his acct by name and address" I said. She then asked me for my Credit Card #. I told her "NO WAY>... look me up by my name and address". I gave her my first and last name with middle initial... and she located my account in her system... she didn't even need my ADDRESS!!!!!
I told her that I am extremely unhappy and am considering filing a lawsuit with her company. She told me that she could see where I cancelled my membership March 16th 2003 and that I should NOT have been billed again this year. I told her that I am demanding the account to be credited back. I also told her that "I am looking at numerous websites pulled up on my computer screen right now as I'm talking to you where people have received their refund back into their accounts in 7-10 business days... will this be a problem???" She said that she is cancelling my account AGAIN and will process my credit. She said the whole 7-10 business day thing to me too.
I asked her if the amount of $79.95 will be credited back to my account in the 7-10 day period. She said that I will be receiving a PRORATED amount of $78.62!!! What a load of CRAP!! I am pissed about that too... but I guess that is another story.
I asked her name and ID number... I also asked her if I was going to be billed again NEXT YEAR... she said that I will not be billed again next year because she cancelled my account. I told her that I had already cancelled it LAST year... and I was STILL CHARGED AGAIN!!!
I will see if my account shows the credit in the next 7-10 business days. If not... I will post again here to update ya'll.
Just a note of advice... if you tell the people on the phone that you know about their scam and about the lawsuits and the BBB poor rating... I bet that you'll have good luck like I did today.
I'm still furious that I was scammed, but I'm at least happier now that I know I MAY BE getting my money back.

Aimee, your complaint is exactly what class action lawyers are looking for.
That they issued a "prorated" refund KNOWING that you cancelled a year ago is totally illegal.
This is what the class action lawyers are looking for. EPIC filed the complaint with the FTC, an IL attorney filed a class action.
There are attorneys who want to file class actions in other states, I don't know why they don't go notional (yet.) For more info, or to become part of a class action, please read and post at http://forum.creditcourt.com/discus/messages/3301/3301.html
It takes only a few people who can provide affidavits for outright fraudulent conduct and they can file the suit. Even if you don't want to be a named defendant to testify and be deposed, affidavits greatly help.

****UPDATE****
I received my REFUND of $78.62 in my bank account this morning. It only took 2 business days... so the whole crock about 7-10 business days is a load of CRAP!!
Anyone reading this forum needs to look at my original post from last Friday to see the tactic I used to get my money back.
Posted by: Aimee at February 10, 2004 05:41 AM
YES!!! I found this charge on my credit card account and flipped out! I typed the name of the company that was on my credit card statement into a web search to try and find out who it was and what I could do about it. All I found was this amoung many other web pages with complaints and a "RIP OFF" page talking about the "Bad buisness bureau". On that site I found a phone number 877-513-4175. I called it and they said that they were going to credit my account within 7 days.
I really hope that this works out. For all of you who haven't called, try it. I wonder if they have gotten a lot of complaints (I can only imagine so) and that they are now giving $$$ back. GOOD LUCK!!!!

To Aimee and Sheryl, and really everybody who gets their money back.
I don't expect every person who gets defrauded by ConsumerInfo.com to read this blog or have internet access in the first place, make calls and waste their time on trying to get the refund.
Why should they?
You know that's not how it is. Of course it's good to see that you got your money back, but do you really want to live in a society where it's OK to submit fraudulent charges and engage in deceptive practices?
You are pretty bright. Do you care about the people who aren't?
I maintain this web site at my expense, to encourage people to do more than care about themselves, to CHANGE how business is done.
If nobody wants to submit affivits and join a class action, there's no point to this site.
http://www.creditsuit.org/cgi-bin/movabletype/mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=351
Of course they are now refunding the money because there's an Illinois class action, and this SHOULD be a national action to get ConsumerInfo.com (Experian) to STOP this practice.

After finding $79.95 on my statement, I called the toll free number listed. I too spoke with a woman who I could barely understand and was told that since this report was run for my father (who has since passed away) I would need to fax a letter and a copy of the death certificate. Well, I did and am sorry to have done so after looking the company up on the internet. Now not only do they have my info , but now my Dad's. I called again today and found the number I used yesterday (866-369-2412) was cancelled per MCI (888-872-9266). I found another # and called and told them I was aware of the class actions against their company and demanded my refund. I was told (by I beleive the same woman) that they would not receive my fax in the refund department for two days and to call this number 888-888-8553. Has anyone gotten refunds or satifaction from this company? Is there anyway I can inform Yahoo that this comany is a rip off and they should not allow them to advertise with them?

Janine, I cannot believe what they are doing!
Forget about Yahoo, make your experience available to attorneys for a nationwide class action:

Unauthorize deduction of personal funds/Possible Terroristic crimes against DOD employees to keep them from being deployed while attending civil/criminal court appearences. This company is now being investigated for such criminal activities through Washington DC (Pentagon), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and local authorities.
Everyone should keep their heads up as I intend to bring this company down perminently.

I work for a bank and had an older client came in with an unrecognized charge from this company. Neither he nor I had any idea who Cic was, so we did a search together. I could not find anything about the company itself, but I did find pages and pages of the same complaint about the company. He paid $15 last year for a credit report that he never received (some of you got off "lucky" with the "free" report) and wrote it off as a loss. Now the $79.95 shows up this year and he has no idea why. I do have our fraud department looking into the company and we will definately get his $ back one way or another. (Whether if they are willing or if we need to revoke the charge.) The phone # that I did get through to the company with is: (800) 220-2626. I noticed many complaints about numbers being changed so you can't reach CIC. I hope all of you DO receive your $ back. I feel like I was scammed personally by this company just trying to help this gentleman.

Several months ago, I ordered free credit report from ConsumerInfo.com. Based on their website, I am supposed to get a free credit report, but I did not get anything from them. I've just found out that they charged $79.95 to my credit card account. I checheked their website again, I realized that they charge $79.95 annual membership. unless I cancel it within 30 days. Another problem is this condition is hard to find on their web site -term and condition is shown only as a link, so customers may not read it unless they click to open it. I called them to cancel my account. They send me a confirm e mail which says that my account was canceled and I will receive a prorated credit- not full refund- to my account within seven to ten business days. I am vey furious about what they are doing. I think this is cheating and should be stopped.

Can some one please give me there PH#
I have some words for them. Can we all go into a class action suit against them?
I never thought I would ever be robbed!!! Where do they get our credit card #s?

The charge is from freecreditreport.com, if you do not cancel the membership within something like 2 weeks, they charge you far a year of credit monitoring for $79.95. Call them and tell them to cancel. I just did, and got my money back.

I recieved two letters from my bank stating that I had over draft charges when i went into the bank and got a new statement from them i discovered that I had a charge of $79.95 to my account from a company that I have never heard of. When I called the company they told me that I signed up with them and gave them my Credit card number for this transaction. I have over $20.00 in bank charges for these people and they would do nothing about the charge. When i asked to speak to their supervisor they would not let me speak to one, due to the fact they were all to vusy taking other callls. They told me a refund would come in 7-10 days for the $79.95.
Posted by: Melinda at February 26, 2004 02:24 PM
I recieved my refund in 3 days. A full refund with no problems. I called them the day I wrote in this forum. The woman I spoke with was quite pleasant as well. I hope that more people will end up with a positive result. Now it seems that I may need to watch out next year, though. I am optimistic that this woman cancelled my account and I will not be billed. Good luck, everyone.
Posted by: amanda at February 28, 2004 03:28 AM
I also had the same problem with CIC. On the day that I saw the charge on my bill, I contacted them right away. She said that it was a 1-year membership fee for credit monitering. When I asked what that was. She said that they would notify me whenever someone checked my credit. My response was that I would ahead of time if someone was doing that because it could not be done without my permission, so why pay 79.95 a year for something I could do myself. She assured me that my money would be refunded within 7-10 working days. So I guess that i'm just waiting to see what happens. I think that they should a bit more clear when signing someone up for credit services.

Unusual charge on account $79.95? sounds like I'm not the only one.
I too wanted only the FREE CREDIT REPORT after giving my account no.
I searched the whole website to cancel any subscription and couldn't find a cancel button or anyhting related.
Now 1 year later an anonymous charge to my account!
If anyone has info. on obtaining refund please e-mail.

What the heck!
I just checked my bank account on line this morning and there it was...$79.95 charged by CIC*CREDIT MONITOR SVC. I was shocked and angry at the same time. I know I NEVER authorized anything like that. I do know that a month ago I ordered a credit report from EQUIFAX and EXPERIAN, both of which were paid for on line. Some how, this company (CIC*CREDIT MONITOR SVC) is tied into these two companies and is privy to your account numbers and your SS#. I called the 800# posted for CIC and was connected with a "Jill" who provided me with her ID number (#63091). She first wanted my credit card #. I flat refused to provide it. She then wanted my SS#. Again, I refused and wound up giving her my name and email address. She found my information and asked if I received the "free credit report!"
I told her I didn't and I wanted my money refunded immediately. She told me she would cancel my account and refund my money in 7 to 10 days. Yeah, something doesn't smell right here!
Thinking that I MIGHT need backup, I called my bank. they cancelled my bank card #, filed a fraud report, and gave me a temporary refund for the $79.95. I think there is more to what's going on here. Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion are all part of this scam. They HAVE to know whats going on. There is just TOO much money involved for them NOT to know. I sure hope the Government can circumcise them all with a rusty ax!
Be safe out there people!

And when anyone orders you to jump, you ask: "How high?"
This is extremely frustrating.
Several people have now posted that they closed their bank and credit cards accounts, incurring massive costs and of course lowering their credit scores.
I don't get it. Why don't people at least TRY to do something about this and provide their evidence to class action attorneys?

The "Government"???????????
Haven't you read anything here?
It is YOUR obligation to take action. The government sends them business, recommending that people order their credit reports.

I cannot beleive the overwhelming amount of complaints of this company and that the goverment has made no stand. This is what I did. I went to FBI.com and filed a complaint (Internet fraud)
And let me tell you.. They get right on it. But I need a lot more people to do the same so we could open eyes. The FBI needs to know that there are more than a few victims. we are in the hundreds. If you multiply the amount of victims by 79.95 I garrantee you it's a lot of money. The people behind CIC Credit Monitor will get caught and there company will be shut down. Even if I have to make this my little mini investigation...I won't stop! I'm going to be their worst nightmare. This goes beyond the 79.95 charge. How about illegally using your full name and SS#.. Did you guys know that? Yes. CIC has your Social Security number and full name and credit card information. Just imaging the kind of damage they can do to us. I have no clue how they received my information. I could only remember going to Equifax.com to get my report. I never clicked anything else. somehow I beleive they tap into the equifax credit card information page. That has to be it. I'll get to the bottom of this real soon. I already contacted my local news station and they are going to do a consumer report. They will track the company down. wouldn't you just love to see that on TV?

I called 877-513-4175 and requested that the account be cancelled because I was never able to log into the account that I created. After a few bad words, hanging up and calling back to speak to someone else, also yelling at them. I was told that I would recieve a prorated amount back to my credit card. They will ask for your name, credit card #, and social security #, tell them your name and tell them that they have the rest of the information obviously, because they have been charging your credit card info. I called on Friday, by Tuesday, I had recieved a credit on my account. I hope everything works out for everyone else. These people need to be shut down. I'll keep checking the sight to see what else I do to help others.

I too was a victim!! On February 19 of 2004, they had charged my VISA a fee of $79.95!! I had called them to have my VISA credited, but the operator (who could barely speak english) asked me for my credit card number and the last digits of my social security... it sounded legit, so I did. She told me that they could only pro-rate the total refund which was $75.00. I did not liked the idea, so I told her that I need a %100 refund!! So she had told me to fax a letter to their so-called "consumer affairs" dept which I did. And told her that I was still going to dispute this with my credit card company!! THESE LOW LIFERS!! Nothing better to do than just ripping off the working class peeps!! These guys should be sent behind bars and stay there!

I had the same problem with CIC* I just called 1-800-220-2626, gave them my name and verified the last 4 digits of SSN and DOB and they said it would be refuned within 7-10 business days. It was very easy and painless.
Posted by: Neil at March 12, 2004 06:34 AM
I called 1-800-220-2626 today, 3/13/04, and requested that my membership be cancelled. The operator at first wanted my SS #. I asked her if there was another means of identification possible. She then took my email address and last four digits of my SS#.
She stated that my account was cancelled, said that I sould recieve a credit to my account within 7-10 days, and gave me her name, Louise, and corporate identification #62455. It was easy. Now, I'll just wait to see if the refund actually arrives!

My husband John and I were very angry when we saw the $79.95 charge on our bank account. He had given them our account number to check his credit score and IMMIDIATELY e-mailed them to keep them from charging our account. Of course, they charged us anyway as they did to all of you. When we did a search on MSN's search engine after noticing the charge on our account, this blog came up almost first on the listing. We used the information we found here to contact CIC and demand our money back. We e-mailed and called their customer service number and got our money back within a few days. It was the full amount, too! I guess the anger we expressed in both e-mail and voice got the message across that we were not fooling around. :) Thank you to all who posted here, especially for the e-mailing and customer service number information on CIC. I hope the information here will help others as it did us. Thanks again!
Posted by: Onesti at March 17, 2004 12:14 PM
By the way, Heidi, I would go ahead and wait the 10 days, just in case. Sometimes transactions are delayed by the banks. However, if the money is not paid and in the full amount in 10 days time, call them again and breath fire down their necks. Hold them to their own words.

I just called 1-800-220-2626 and talked to a woman named Cecile, her corporate I.D.# is 63267 and she informed me that the charges would be removed in 7-10 days. She had mentioned that there is a 6 month period in which to cancel, so call as soon as possible and hopefully you will get satisfaction. GOOD LUCK
Posted by: Carol Myers at March 27, 2004 12:16 PM
If they really give you 6 months to cancel now, that's probably the result of the class actions.
Is it prorated or a full refund?
Posted by: Christine at March 27, 2004 02:18 PM
Same problem....Cic*credit Monitor Svc appeared on my account and I can't get in touch with them to have them stop billing me. Run a search for these people and they've been reported to the BBB of several states.
Posted by: ToddR. at March 29, 2004 03:33 AM
I too was ripped off. I never signed up for this credit report. Somthing has to be done. How can they get away with this??? I did call and was told that it would take 7-10 days for my account to be credited. This is ridiculous!
Posted by: Diane at March 29, 2004 09:17 AM
I also found this CIC on one of my credit cards. I tried to call the 800 number for the company, to no avail, there was no ring, there was no busy signle, there was nothing. I dialed it 4 different times, with the same thing, nothing.
I did call my credit card company, they are removing the charge, closing out the account, open a new one and sending me the papers for fraud. I hope that perhaps we can catch these jerks who are basically stealing money. Yes $79... whatever is petty larceny, but multiply that by the 1000's of people this rip off company are doing this too and they are making 100' of thousands of dollars per year.
I too had possession of my credit card.......... but someone, somewhere apparently kept my number and used it.

***PLEASE READ - SOLUTION***
My wife called our bank about the $79 and the bank representative knew about CIC and gave her their phone number to call - 1-877-513-4175.
She called the number and hassled with the first representative. Based on the comments in this post, she did not give them her Social Security # nor the full credit card number (it's a Check Card).
She asked for a supervisor, who was able to search for her by her first & last name. No luck... so on a whim, my wife gave her maiden name that was tied to the check card over 3 years ago.
Bingo. She came up under her maiden name. The supervisor, Claire (employee ID# 60429), confirmed my wife's birthdate and last 4 digits of her social security number that was used. Claire, then told her the charges would be reversed, that the "membership" would be cancelled. Chargeback within 7 to 10 days.
Claire then informed us that my wife signed up for the membership, last month. Again, my wife has not used her maiden name in over 3 years. So, there is some dirty pool being played.
Our next step is to change the credit card/check card number with the bank.
Be firm with these people. They know they are under attack and seem willing to comply. My wife did say that this Claire was very pleasent to talk with.
My thought is that Claire's bosses are the criminals that are some how gaining access to an old database of Credit Card numbers. If you have further questions, please contact me at: noah @ pshawmusic.com

My girlfriend and I (shared account) have also been gotten by these criminals. It appears that they charged her check card number (which is different from mine but same account) without her even ordering a free report from consumerinfo.com or any other such company.
I myself did order credit reports from Transunion, Equifax, and Experian recently but used a credit card for payment not related to the check account CIC Credit charged in this scam. I wonder of my ordering credit reports even though I did not use my BofA account to pay for it could in any way be related to this scam? It seems unlikely given our circumstances but credit reports seem to be the only link between those caught up in this.
I contacted my BofA and was told that a fraudulent charge claim will be filed and that I will almost 100% for certain get my money back from CIC through BofA pending BofA's investigation. I was also told that BofA can put a block on any future charges from this vendor.
What I am wondering is if it's really necessary to cancel our current cards (a huge hassle and inconvenience) if these people can just get our account number from thin air(?) anyway?! I am not going to call CIC Credit personally because I have nothing but angry words to say to them anyway and it appears BofA will handle this situation adequately in any case. I just wonder when they will be stopped!! It appears this has been going for at least 6 months now!
I am sure our government is going to get to this soon though. In fact, just as soon as it is done dealing with the following high priority emergencies: plugging up leaks of required info to and interferring with the 9/11 investigation; taking care of Janet Jackson, Howard Stern, and overall indecency being broadcast over our airwaves; keeping women from getting medically necessary abortions; and keeping those lowly gays from getting married. A bunch of crap this is country is sinking into, I tell you...

I am a South African married to an American Lady.
Due to the unstability of our local currency, we keep a fund in my wife's U.S. Credit Union account.
Today we needed some extra money for the Easter holidays, and lo behold, CIC Credit Monitor has stolen $ 79.95. If you withdraw money from an account WIHOUT authorization it's called THEFT.
We want our money back as well as the ass of the Crook-in-chief.

My girlfriend and I ordered credit reports because we were looking to buy a car. So one credit report for me, one for my girlfriend. Order the free trial, cancel, and bam double charged. One for me and one for her. Go to the website and cancel yet again. This month same thing. Charged again. Called the company and welcome to probably an off shore call center. Lady spoke very poor english and was obviously reading from a script. I told her that I had canceled the service before the "free" trial was over but she immediatly said (without doing research) that there was no record of me ever contacting the company or cancelling the service on the internet. She even read the part of the script trying to get me to keep the service. I interrupted her and said "no cancel my service and refund my money." Yea nice credit racket these guys got going on.

Yeah, well, that's why there are class actions. Unfortunately, most people just want their money back and do NOT want to participtate in a lawsuit.
Subsequently, I've had at least one attorney write that he is no longer pursuing a national class action.
I can't blame him.

I found this same charge on my mastercard last friday. I looked up the CIC company on the internet and that was how I found this site. When I did find the link for the company (I believe it is the fourth one down on yahoo), I looked for a contact number and surprise surprise there was none. The only number I was able to find that worked was the 1-800-220-2626. I called and after trying to resale the membership five times, the customer service rep. said I would see a refund in seven to ten days. From reading the other posts on this site, im also going to look into putting a block on this company through my bank. It seems they like to take the money regardless if you ordered their so-called service or if you canceled the membership.
Christine, I would like to add that I believe because of your work in this matter that the refunds are much more easy to obtain. Im not sure how the class action suit works, but Im giving it thought and going to do a little research. Thank you.

I looked at my checking account on line as I do every couple days and found four pending $79.95
CIC Credit Monitor charges ready to go through on Monday. I imediately called the 800 number for my bank and disputed the charges. They said as they were pending in process they could not stop them. It can take up to 90 days to complete the dispute. I'm curious how many other disputes they have working for the same thing. I have since went on line the seen all the complaints dating back to 2003 and I too can't believe the FCC or District Attorney in Orange County haven't done anything about it. From the complaints I've read it seems as though I'm not going to see my almost $400 for a while!

CIC Credit just charged my bank account 21 times for $79.95 each, for a total of nearly $1,700. This goes far beyond a hidden opt-out scam. These people are STEALING my money. Of course it happened on a Friday night after their switchboard closed, and will clear my account before I can do anything about it.
My first call Monday morning will be to CIC, and I will not be lenient.
My second call will be to the office of the California attorney general.
My third call will be to the Orange County Register.
Posted by: Jwindley at April 18, 2004 10:18 PM
21 times!!! I'd like to see how that happened. The browser stuck on reload?
Since nobody in their right mind would order more than one service, it seems they would have an automatic block for duplicates.

I was also charged the $79.95, and have had no luck trying to get my money refunded. I had indeed asked for a "free" credit report back in March, and now I am being hit with the charge of $79.95. i am disputing it with my bank, and I hope that something will get taken care of.....

well, I just talked to someone over there at CIC, and they kept trying to persuade me to keep something that I don't even want! I must have said no a dozen times, and finally the woman said that she would process my credit back to my account for $72.68! That is such BULLSH#@! I am so pissed! I never even used the stupid ass service! all I got was a f@#%ing credit report and even that wasn't FREE!

I signed up Friday for the free credit report with consumer info and got charged the same day for $2 on my credit card. I just now noticed it and found your comments from searching on Google. I will call them first thing tomorrow to see what is going on.

This is completely insane. I wont even go into details because I am pretty upset. I wrote a check for X amount of money and due to this unauthorized CIC transaction; my check is going to bounce due to insufficient funds in my account.
Well...as the general victimized public, we will remain victims to predators that use scams like this to profit on unsuspecting peoples; ( UNLESS WE ACT!)
If we all complain to the FEDS and take our time to write testimonials than we can charge up a big case against them and get our money back. Excuse my french but F*ck the money, lets make the unrighteous pay for their wrondoings! I am in college and I cant afford to get ripped off.
I also got ripped off by First National Card. I am burning with fire; in the past 2 weeks I got ripped off for 379.95 total.
I AM READY TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION. WE ALL MUST BE READY TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION. IF WE DONT, WE WILL REMAIN VICTIMS OF fineprint, SCAMS, EVEN OUR OWN GOVERNMENT...whom is so concerned with foreign policy that they forget the war that is going on in the home front.....SCAM AND IDENTITY THEFT!
WILL WE ACT?

Your posting motivated me to spend the day working on the new Fight back! Forum.

If you're ready for action, that's the place to post. If you're in Illinois or California, you may already qualify to be members in the class actions there - the info is at the forum.
An attorney is looking to file a national class action, but he's been contacting people who had posted complaints and they IGNORED him.
It'll always be up to a few to make Earth a better planet for everybody.

Lucky me...I was charged $89.95 on 5/17. Their fraudulent rates must have gone up.

I was looking at my credit statement online and noticed this charge. Its 10:30pm, so when I called the 800 number it was obviously closed. I called my credit card company and disputed the charge and now I have to go through all this hastle to dispute it. I told the operator at my card company about my discoveries of this CIC company through GOOGLE web searches. She told me she flagged that charge and it will be investigated. Hopefully something will be done to stop this from happening to others.

I got ripped off by CIC Credit Monitor on 5/26/04 for $79.95. I reported it to my bank (Washington Mutual) and they are taking care of it. I'll let you all know what happens...

Hi. I'm new to this forum. These people have been charging me annually (in May of each year) since May 2000, the first time I requested my "free" credit report. At least the last two years I have not been surprised. If you call them (Consumerinfo.com)at 888-888-8553 and tell them you don't want this, you did not authorize, they will reverse the charge. At least they have for me. It still ticks me off that I have to call, I told them last year take me off your list. Obviously they did not, I just got charged $79.95 on Saturday. I refuse to cancel my credit card because of these jerks. Thanks for the info. Cyndi

After researching some Bank issues on my fiances account i noticed a CIC Credit Monitor for $8.95 just recently posted. This has happened in the past that some company managed to steal money without our approval and we called and got them to cancel and refund the money. I started looking back in history and was amazed to find they also nailed us on 4/8/04 as well. I need to research this further because i'm starting to wonder if at some point, they got us for $79.95 like everyone else and we just didn't notice. If someone is really going to go after them they need to spell it out clearly how we can join up and contribute to ending this frustration. I don't want to close accounts, wait for new checks, re-issue bank cards just to be free of this because it's not our fault.

There's a topic with class action information at http://www.fight-back.us/forum/.
Also, I'm closing the comments for this blog while I'm moving it - maybe a few days.

I would like to revise my statement. Mohammed Bousfiha is actually a business owner of a number of companies in the Columbus, Ohio area. When you purchase any merchandise from his stores his name pops up on your online bank statement until the next day when it is replaced with the name of the company where you made the purchase. I recieved my useless credit report form CIC. It was not worth the trouble. The report does not give any account numbers or addresses of the companies that claim you owe them money. It is all a scam to keep you from obtaining your fee credit report which by law if you are turned down for credit the credit companies are suppose to give you a fee credit report. But oh well. We live in the home of the free not the free credit report:>).....
