Robert V. Townes, IV v. TransUnion, LLC and TrueLink class action proposed settlement

A reader just sent me the notice, thank you!

The details are at http://www.townessettlement.com/

It appears to be the exact same scam settlement as Hillis / Slack v. Equifax and Fair Isaac.  Of course I will object and I’ll post a detailed analysis later.

Greetings Christine,

I received this same notice today by email and was not sure if the link was valid or not, so a Google search brought me here...not to Townes’ site. I will wait for further info before and if I do anything about it…

thanks for your work

I just received this same email. But me being a non believer in just about every email i get unsolicited, and reading of this I see it as more of an add and not a settlement. Looking forward to seeing what you determine.

I received the same e-mail.  After researching a little bit, I was able to find a link on TransUnion’s website.  If you go to http://www.transunion.com/corporate/personal/consumerSupport/consumerResources.page? on the right side of the screen is a link on the Townes Settlement.  It takes you to the settlement website mentioned in the first post.  Obviously, if TransUnion has it on their website, it should be legit.  Otherwise, they would have it posted on their site that this is a scam.  Hope this helps you others out there who got the same e-mail.

“Obviously, if TransUnion has it on their website, it should be legit”

I’m so sorry, how could I expect anyone who hasn’t been a regular reader to have the slightest clue?

My sincerest apologizes, please read Trans Union SCAMS and FRAUD and My Objection to the Hillis / Slack proposed settlement

The deadlines to opt out and to object are in August, so you have a lot of time to educate yourself and as I posted above, I will post a detailed analysis of this scam settlement.

I’m hoping that a lawyer will object on behalf of numerous members.  Don’t really know how that works, but I suppose if there was a lawyer willing to take on thousands of class members as clients, we might have a chance of making a difference.

Most important, millions of people might find out how they’re being scammed by all the credit bureaus, that they pay for incomplete reports, the those TrueCredit and Experian PLUS credit scores aren’t worth the pixels on the screen and that TU is a corrupt organization deliberately and maliciously violating the FCRA to make its owners even richer.

I just looked at the doeckt report for the District Court in Delware, and the court records contain the court’s order redarding deadlines, e-mail notice, etc.  So, I feel confident saying that it is legitimate- unless a U.S. District Court judge is in on the scam smile

I can’t send a link or anything because you ahve to pay to be able to use PACER, but I would be happy to e-mail a copy of the Court order to this site to post (but I really do not want to e-mail it to a bunch of different people).  So let me know if you want a copy for this site.  Thanks!

Well, Matt, the essence of your posting ought to be a chapter in my book.

The problem isn’t the scam settlements, it’s that even people who are smart enough to go to PACER still don’t have the brains to figure out that this is a giant scam.

YES, the district court judge IS part of it unless he decides NOT to grant final approval.

I posted two links above, exactly which words don’t you understand?

Nicaragua, here I come!  It’s becoming unbearable to be subjected to so much stupidity on a daily basis.

I really expected my objection to get some lights to come on, but no, there is no hope for America.  It’s as dark as it can be.

Matt,
“So, I feel confident saying that it is legitimate- unless a U.S. District Court judge is in on the scam”
That is the biggest problem in the fight for fair reporting. I do not object to the thieves, crooked lawyers and other corporate goblins. They are what I expect from them.
I do object to the total disdain the “U.S. District judges” have for pro se appelants and their ignorance of credit law and unwillingness to apply the law. In fact they go out of their way to obstruct justice. Dont believe me then read Christine’s blog and others.

Not trying to put you down but their is no room in Banking America for those who are naive.

Try reporting the e-mail to your service provider as a scam and you’ll notice it disappears from your inbox as well as trash or sentmail boxes.  mmm, I wonder why?

Posted by RC  on  06/06/2007

Why on earth would you report the email as scam?

Didn’t you read my objection to the Hillis settlement?

You need to “report” the ATTORNEYS and the JUDGE!

Posted by Christine  on  06/06/2007

WOW!
I received a “Notice of Proposed Clas Action Settlement” in the mail the other day, and thought it wise to research.  Can I just tell you how “thrilled” I am at the prospect of receiving a settlement of 3 free months of TransUnion Credit Monitoring (a total of approx $30.00) But I am getting the better deal because TransUnion is running a special - 30 day risk free trial, $9.95/month thereafter.
Oh - but it gets better - The court will conduct a hearing on 9/11/07 on whether to approve the Settlement, and determine what fees/expenses should be awarded to class counsel (UP TO $1.3 MILLION ... that is MILLION) and Plaintiff (UP TO $7,500.00).
But as long as I get my 3 free months of credit monitoring....
1-800-ISA-SCAM.

OK i guess this is going to become and epedimic? Yesterday I received “Notice of proposed class action settlementand fairness hearing” for not..Transunion this time but… Wells Fargo case no. C-05-3403-CRB It is the same scam, they are settling for two free credit reports, and 50.00 rebate on a first mortgage loan from Wells Fargo, provided they qualify and obtain a loan. It says that plaintiff’s counsel believes the settlement is fair and in the best interest of the settlement class. I think MR. Plaintiff Probably actually is employeed by Wells Fargo. Thanks for reading and beware.

Oh I just found this website as a reference. http://www.yeagleysettlement.com/

Posted by Mike  on  06/20/2007

Boy, am I glad I found this site.  I got the postcard in the mail yesterday also.  I went to the website and printed the “authentication” form and started to feel uncomfortable when they were asking for my full legal name, date of birth, last 4 digits of my social, current and last address, email and....last, but not least ... my signature.  Can you special identify theft???  That was the first thing that popped in my mind.  Not good.

For those who think this is a scam,

You all have the right to choose either opt out or join the class action.  There’s a reason why you received the card (e.g. your privacy rights were violate—your credits were being released to the marketing agents).

Just be intellegent about your call.

Posted by Guy  on  06/29/2007

Yeah, hopefully a LOT more intelligent than you.

From http://www.townessettlement.com/notice.pdf

“I. THE LITIGATION:

On December 1, 2004, Robert V. Townes, IV filed suit against TransUnion, LLC (“TransUnion”) and TrueLink, Inc. (“TrueLink”) in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. Mr. Townes alleged that TransUnion and TrueLink had violated federal law (specifically, the Credit Repair Organizations Act (“CROA”)) with respect to the marketing, sale and representations they made concerning certain credit score and credit monitoring Offerings sold by TransUnion and TrueLink (on their websites, truecredit.com, transunion.com, transunioncs.com, knowyourloanrate.com and freecreditprofile.com). Plaintiff alleged that TransUnion and TrueLink were credit repair organizations because they sold services for the express or implied purpose of improving a consumer’s credit record, credit history or credit rating, and, failed to comply with the requirements of the CROA statute. Mr. Townes also alleged a claim under state law that TransUnion and TrueLink were unjustly enriched by payments made for the offerings. Mr. Townes brought suit on his own behalf and on behalf of all consumers who purchased certain credit score and credit monitoring Offerings from TransUnion or TrueLink since December 1, 1999. Mr. Townes sought the recovery of damages and attorney’s fees.”

DUH!

Troll or dumb?

In the future, I’ll just delete those comments.

Not many, that’s for sure.

And thanks, Mike, that Wells Farge settlement is just hideous.

If there is a hell, it’s for the lawyers.

Posted by Christine  on  06/29/2007

I received the Wells Fargo settlement information on Monday, July 25th with a deadline of submitting my FULL social security number, DOB, gender, signature and phone number by July 30th. It sounded like a scam to me but even if this is not a scam this is a very poor settlement and the lawyers should be ashamed.

Rec’d email from Robert V Townes, Townes SettlementAdministrator[townesnotice@tgcginc.com] regarding receipt of settlement on law suit with Trans Union.  Found it weird to be coming in email and not via letter and now see it’s a SCAM.  This website is very helpful.

Posted by B Houston  on  05/24/2008

Received the same email yesterday:
If you have not submitted an Authentication Form and wish to receive the free months of TransUnion Credit Monitoring, you must submit an Authentication Form on-line or by mail no later than July 22, 2008. This Authentication Form is necessary to assure that Defendants’ and Class Members’ privacy rights are protected and to assure that only Class Members receive the free months of TransUnion Credit Monitoring. An Authentication Form may be obtained on-line at http://www.townessettlement.com, by calling 800-961-6428 or by sending a written request to the Settlement Administrator at Robert V. Townes, IV v. TransUnion, LLC and TrueLink, Inc., c/o The Garden City Group, Inc., P.O. Box 9130, Dublin, OH 43017-4130. Your Authentication Form must be submitted on-line or postmarked (if sent by mail) not later than July 22, 2008.

Did not know what it was about so I came here.  Figured it was a scam…

I received the settlement e-mail that should have contained my benefit code. There is no code shown in the e-mail nor can a find a way to report or inquire about the problem.

Posted by James O. Bryant, Jr.  on  08/07/2008

I also received two emails with the code area blank. Then I got one with the code.  Now I can’t figure out what the benefit of using the service is as it appears that I have to pay for everything anyways???  Am I missing something?

Posted by L Bauer  on  08/08/2008

I have now received two emails, both without benefit codes. The townessettlement.com site just says there is nothing there.

Posted by p andagronski  on  08/08/2008

I checked both the links, “Trans Union Scams and Frauds”, which leads to discussion forum, and “My Objection to the Hillis / Slack proposed settlement”, which eventually several documents regarding another case.  While both point to TransUnion being a fraudulent company, neither really even briefly explains Townes or the email.  Is this really a scam or simply a “poor settlement”?

Posted by Aaron  on  08/10/2008

You’re obviously being scammed, although this is a very different scam than what I was talking about.  The settlement is done and over with, as evidenced by the disappearance of the settlement site.

“Is this really a scam or simply a “poor settlement”?”

What makes you think it can’t be both?

I didn’t get to posting the “detailed analysis” as I originally posted, but it’s no big loss.  The general public is so dumbed down there NOTHING I can do to get through to the average American.

I could be writing for cannibals in the jungle and get the same results.

You are a credit counselor and activist.  Because you live and breath the credit market every day, you know a lot more about than all but a tiny portion of the population.  You know more about credit than most engineers, scientists, and doctors, all of whom tend to be very intelligent people.  Your error is that you are conflating superior knowledge of credit with superior intelligence in general.  You may be trying to impress people, but you are only coming across as pretentious.  Genuinely intelligent people (not Hollywood actors) compete and verbally spar with each other but rarely engage in such crude chest thumping.  In regards to Americans, if you are expecting the global population to be appreciably more intelligent or virtuous then I believe that you will be disappointed in the long run.

“regards to Americans, if you are expecting the global population to be appreciably more intelligent or virtuous then I believe that you will be disappointed in the long run.”

The global population isn’t living in the “greatest country in the world”.

It is disgusting to see the people with the most opportunities be LAZIEST and DUMBEST.

I don’t expect a cannibal in the jungle to know a thing about anything but how to live in the jungle.

Similarly, I expect the people in AMERICA to get off their lazy asses, get rid of their damned TVs and get a freaking CLUE!

THIS site is for people with an inquiring mind and half a functioning brain, interested in learning what’s really going on, how to make a difference and ACTIVELY WORKING TO MAKE THIS A BETTER WORLD FOR ALL.

There are about a billion other websites appropriately dumbed down for you with friendly experts cheerfully advising you.

PLEASE GO AND ENJOY THOSE SITES!
